Analysis of Palatal Rugae Morphology Before and After Orthodontic Treatment by a Digital Image Recognition System International Journal of Morphology
Xiu-Ping,Wu; Jian-Ning,Han; Pan,Fen; Yu-Jin,Wan; Li,Bing.
To analyze the accuracy rate of a digital image recognition system in matching the palatal rugae Morphology after orthodontic treatment, before orthodontic treatment and to provide theoretical evidence for individual identification in the field of forensic dentistry. High-resolution digital images of the palatal rugae were taken under particular conditions from each patient before and after orthodontic treatment. Features of each digital image were extracted using a digital image recognition system and included in the palatal rugae database. Using an MATLAB software system, information matching of the palatal rugae was performed. From the matching results, the accuracy rate of individual identification of orthodontic patients was 100 %, with a Euclidean...

Application of Palatal Rugae Morphology in Forensic Identification International Journal of Morphology
Wu,Xiu-Ping; Han,Jian-Ning; Fen,Pan; Wang,Yu-Jin; Bing,Li.
To investigate the feasibility of application of digital images of the palatal rugae in forensic identification. One hundred patients, consisting of 50 males and 50 females, who received treatment between January 2015 and June 2015 at Shanxi Medical University Stomatological Hospital, China, were included in this study. High-resolution digital image of the palatal rugae was taken from each patient using a digital SLR camera and then processed using a digital image recognition system, including noise reduction, contrast enhancement, image segmentation, feature extraction, edge detection and information matching. Using an MATLAB software system, match results and the time taken by each operator for information matching were recorded. The digital image...

Morphometric Analysis of the Scapula and Their Differences between Females and Males International Journal of Morphology
Oliveira Costa,Ana Camily; Feitosa de Albuquerque,Pedro Paulo; de Albuquerque,Priscilla Virgínio; Ribeiro de Oliveira,Belisa Duarte; Lima de Albuquerque,Yuri Mateus; Caiaffo,Vitor.
Sexual dimorphism is a key role for forensic anthropology. It allows ascertaining the sex of certain biological discoveries. By postmortem studies it is possible to establish a profile of individuals. This profile allows the identification in cases where bodies are skeletonized. Several bones present dimorphism and have been studied to increase approach for forensic identification. This study morphometrically evaluated the scapula bone and compared the measurements between scapula bone of female and male cadavers. Sixty parts were utilized in this experiment. All cadavers belonged to the Department of Animal Morphology and Physiology of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. The scapula bones were photographed and measured through software ImageJ®....

Morphometric Study of the Humerus Segments in Indian Population International Journal of Morphology
Somesh,M. S; Prabhu,Latha V; Shilpa,K; Pai,Mangala M; Krishnamurthy,Ashwin; Murlimanju,B. V.
The aim of the present study was to obtain the measurements of the different humerus segments and to estimate the length of humeri from them. For this purpose 100 (51 left and 49 right) sex-aggregated, adult dry humerus from Indian population, were taken to analyze the morphometric details of the humerus segments. The distance between five different segments viz: most proximal point of the humeral head and greater tuberosity (HA), head of the humerus and surgical neck of humerus (HB), proximal and distal point of olecranon fossa (HC), the distal point of olecranon fossa and trochlea of humerus (HD), proximal point of olecranon fossa and distal point of trochlea of humerus (HE) and finally the maximum length of humerus (HL) were obtained by means of an...

Palatal Rugae Patterns of Urhobos in Abraka, South-Southern Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Eboh,Dennis E. O.
Human identification is a major task undertaken in forensic sciences. Palato-rugoscopy is based on the principle that no two palates are the same. The study of palatine rugae and the study of fingerprints are sometimes complementary as they operate in similar methods based on same scientific basis. The study intends to describe the shape and gender distribution of the palatine rugae and their prevalence in the studied population. The study sample consisted of 84 subjects, 42 males and 42 females of Urhobo ethnic and cultural background, between 17 and 30 years old, with full complement of maxillary teeth, drawn purposively from Abraka. The prevalence of palatal rugae shapes was: line (27.2%), sinuous (21.1%), angle (18.1%), polymorphhic (15.5%), point...

Performance Evaluation as a Diagnostic Test for Traditional Methods for Forensic Identification of Sex International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
This study assesses the quality, as a diagnostic test, of the main indicators of morphological sexual dimorphism through direct anthropometry, biostatistics tools and clinical epidemiology. This study used 284 skulls of adult Brazilians, of which 187 were male and 97 female. A study of the cross-evaluation of the diagnostic test was performed; it was a qualitative approach based on visual examination of 16 traditional indicators of morphological sexual dimorphism, where each indicator determined the level of accuracy, sensitivity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and odds ratio. All indicators studied had high levels of accuracy (84.7572.89%). The best indicators were found in traits whose formation is related to the insertion and action of major...

Sex Determination from Occipital Condylar Measurements by Baudoin Index in Forensic Purposes International Journal of Morphology
Oliviera,Osvaldo Fortes de; Tinoco,Rachel Lima Ribeiro; Daruge Júnior,Eduardo; Araujo,Laís Gomes de; Silva,Ricardo Henrique Alves da; Paranhos,Luiz Renato.
In human identification for forensic purposes the sex is one of the most important and first features to be assessed in each case. Baudoin condylar index is a sex determination method based on measurements of length and width of the occipital condyle. The aim of this research was to apply the Baudoin condylar index for sex determination, and evaluate its reliability. The sample was composed of 100 Brazilian human skulls, 50 male and 50 female from São Gonçalo cemetery, City of Cuiabá, Brazil. The measurement values were statistically analyzed in order to compare the matching rate for each sex, each side, as well as the overall average. The results showed that the overall percentage of success in applying the Baudoin index was 44.83% to males, and 51.93% to...

Sex Determination Using Mastoid Process Measurements in Brazilian Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
The mastoid process characteristics are of great utility in the diagnosis of sex. De Paiva & Segre (2003) described that sex diagnosis was possible based on the determination of the área of the triangle formed by the points porion, mastoidale, and asterion. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of sexual dimorphism in the dimensions and the área of the mastoid triangle using statistical and discriminant function analysis. A total of 81 skulls of Brazilian individuáis that were part of the Museum of the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) collection were used, with sex and ages known: 50 men and 31 women between 40 and 70 years of age (mean 51.58 years, SD 7.319). Most of the lineal dimensions and the calculated áreas were...
